Offered is this double-sided single page antique newspaper, the "Daily New Era" from Atlanta. This is the Thursday morning, January 7, 1869 edition. This was a Republican-leaning paper published by Samuel Bard from 1865 through 1872 during the Southern Reconstruction era after the Civil War. The paper was the official journal of both the United States and the State of Georgia, hence the number of Presidential Proclamations and other governmental news covered. Numerous politicians and generals of the era are mentioned, including William Seward, General Meade, General Grant (the President-elect) and Schuyler Colfax, the Vice President-elect. Other interesting items include train schedules in and out of Atlanta and various ads, including ones for Christmas presents, curious given the date of the issue. This is apparently a very rare, maybe even unique find; at the time of original listing I could not find another Atlanta "Daily New Era" newspaper or any other Atlanta newspapers from this era for sale on eBay. The newspaper is approx. 23" x 17". It is in fair to good condition. There are no major tears, although there is one small tear, as shown, and numerous short edge tears, a few tiny holes and some very small bits missing from the edges in places. The printing is clear and readable. I don't know if this is the complete newspaper for the day or if there were originally more pages, but since the pages are not numbered I think this is the entire day's paper. It was found folded in half and will be shipped that way. Please take a moment to look at some of the other items in my eBay store!
